What are the benefits of storing my digital material in the ACC DR?

Increased dissemination and impact of your work: A digital repository provides high visibility and increased access to your work which will be shared with the AUB community and the world.

Persistence: The ACC DR provides permanent URLs to your digital material and learning objects.

Preservation: The ACC DR is committed to preserving your digital content for long term access and use.

Copyright control: Because control of intellectual property has specific legal implications, every situation is unique. EVEN WHEN SHARED ON THE ACC DR, YOU WILL ALWAYS RETAIN CONTROL AND OWNERSHIP OF YOUR CREATIVE WORK.

Maintain the scholarly record: The ACC DR provides the infrastructure to collect, preserve, and manage access to this important part of the University’s scholarly record, thus continuing the long term tradition of archives and libraries.

What is meant by the term “open access”?

When we say that a digital repository provides "open access," we mean that anyone may view the items included without having to pay to do so. Access is immediate, free, and unrestricted in most cases.

How is sharing my digital material in the ACC DR different from posting it on my own website?

Sharing your digital material in the ACC DR is better than posting it on your own website because:

  • ACC DR maintains your files and makes them accessible from a central place.

  • ACC DR has no space or storage limitation.

  • ACC DR gives you control over access. A digital repository allows you to limit who can see various aspects of your work for a given time, if you need to do so.

  • ACC DR is stable and permanent. URLs won’t break, move or change in the years ahead.

Who is coordinating the development and maintenance of the ACC DR?

The Academic Computing Center is committed to keeping the ACC DR up-to-date with the latest technologies and services. The ACC is responsible for the upkeep of the DR server and offers support to all AUB faculty members interested in developing digital material for their teaching.

Will my content be available permanently and securely on the ACC DR?

Yes. When your item becomes part of the ACC Digital Repository it is assigned a persistent URL, i.e. an unbreakable link. This means that, unlike most URLs, this identifier will not have to be changed when the system migrates to new hardware, or when changes are made to the system.

How soon after submission can I view an item?

In most cases, the submission must go through a work flow process. The submission will be reviewed to ensure that it is copyright compliant. The DR team will follow up on any uncertainties. Once the work flow has been completed, the submission will be made live on the ACC DR.

What if I want to share digital material with my students only?

In the submission form, under the copyright and sharing section, you can select "I want to share this item with my students only". After receiving your request, the ACC DR administrator will send you the link to the item. It won't be searchable within the ACC DR and it can be accessed only through its link.

Note that videos not available to the AUB community in general have some restrictions:

  • The items should be used in an AUB course.

  • At the end of each academic year you will need to confirm to the DR administrator that you’ll need the item in the next year.

  • Videos not confirmed by the end of the academic year will be removed from the ACC DR.

How do I know if the material I am uploading abides by copyright laws?

In most cases, you are safe to share two types of material:

  • Digital material that AUB owns the copyright of
  • Digital material that you developed and own the copyright of

You can also submit material that you DON’T OWN the copyright of in the following cases:

  • If you have written permission from the publisher or from the party responsible for the work to SHARE the material openly. (Please include the permission with your submission).
  • If you intend to share the material with your students only and you abide by the Fair Use of copyrighted material.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are not sure, please contact us.
